Hi everyone! My name is Amy Zhou and I am a sophomore in college. I attend the University of Pennsylvania and study under the dual-degree Jerome Fisher Management & Technology, from which I will pursue a degree in Computer Science through Penn Engineering and a degree in Finance through the Wharton School of Business. I graduated as Valedictorian of my high school class, and I strive to apply the knowledge and experiences I have gained to help my peers and improve the world. Additionally, I served as President of the Memphis Chinese Community of Teen Volunteers. As cultural ambassadors, I led our team to organize annual events and partner with the local Chinese school to increase appreciation for the beauty, eccentricity, and complexity of Chinese-American culture. Hello everyone, my name is Ray and I am currently in 10th grade at White Station High School in Memphis Tennessee. I enjoy playing tennis, playing flute, and biking. Learning to speak English fluently is a big challenge for many that are not born in the United States, and after being introduced to this organization by a friend, I knew that I would enjoy not only helping Chinese children speak English, but also building positive, long-lasting relationships with them.
Alexandra Shirley
Hi guys! I’m Alexandra Shirley, and I’m currently a sophomore at White Station High School in Memphis, TN. I’m a cross country runner, figure skater, and also love learning Chinese! I started learning Chinese almost three and a half years ago, and I’ve loved every step of the way -- I’m even planning on going to China next summer. Because of this, I know how hard learning a new language can be, and I want to do my absolute best to make sure that every student has the opportunity to not only learn English, but to love it. 加油!

Hello! My name is Ian MacDougall. I am currently a sophomore at the University of Tennessee Knoxville pursuing an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering. At the age of 16, I graduated as the salutatorian of my high school. Teaching is one of my passions, and I have tutored countless students in a variety of subjects over the last four years. I aspire to ignite a spark in the kids I teach, a spark that motivates them to expand their horizons, develop their interests, and inspires them to constantly remain curious about the world around them. Some of my interests and hobbies apart from teaching are Latin music, food/cooking, water polo/swimming, mathematics, traveling, coding, and learning new languages (I am currently learning Mandarin)! I am excited to get to know you as a mentor and a friend!

Hello everyone! My name is Jennifer Chiu and I am a junior in Memphis, TN. In my free time, I enjoy reading all sorts of books and writing stories, as well as spending time with my friends. I also enjoy learning languages; right now, I am studying Spanish at school and studying Korean and Mandarin in my free time. As a native Cantonese speaker, I understand how challenging it is to learn a new language, especially English. I hope that I can not only guide you on your English journey, but also get to know you as a mentor and friend!

Hi everyone! My name is Whitney Chen. I am currently a junior at White Station High School. I enjoy reading, learning to code, and hanging out with friends. Although I was born in the United States, I spent the first four years of my life in China and Mandarin was my first language. Learning English was a challenge when I first came to the U.S., but now English is my main language. I believe that you can learn to speak and write English fluently too! Hi everyone! I’m Brandy, a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania. I’m currently studying in the engineering school, but learning foreign languages is something that lies very close to my heart. In addition to English and Mandarin, I also have some beginning knowledge in Spanish, Korean, and Japanese! Hi everyone, I’m Grace and I’m a junior at White Station High School. English is my first language, but I speak Mandarin at home. I enjoy Model United Nations, music, and art, and in my free time I love designing things. I love learning French, and am on my third year learning it. Learning French has been such an amazing journey for me, and I’ve learned a lot about the culture as well as the language. Hi all, my name is Justin Lee, and I am an Electrical Engineering student in Edison, New Jersey. I am currently 16 years old, and enrolled in my junior year of high school. My favorite subjects and interests include mathematics, computer sciences, business and economics, and soccer. Currently, I am on my schools CJML Math League team, part of the TSA and FBLA organizations, and learning to code. In my free time, you can find me playing video games, watching the tv, reading, and hanging out with friends. I play varsity soccer for my school, and I enjoy swimming in the summer. I love meeting and interacting with new people, as well as experiencing new things. Learning a new language is always exciting, and I cannot wait to be a part of that journey. Hello everyone, my name is Alexandria Pigram. I am a junior attending Christian Brothers University, and I am currently pursuing a bachelor's in Cybersecurity. Truly, my hobby is learning new hobbies; new experiences have always intrigued me. Teaching has been one of my newfound passions; I work as a teacher's assistant with the goal of teaching young children the basics of programming. Hey guys!! My name is Gabrielle Shirley, and this year I am a freshman at White Station High in Memphis Tennessee! I am a competitive figure skater and love being on the ice! I also love to bake and cook for my family! I have been in Debate for 3 years now, and plan to do Debate in High School too. I found this organization through my sister, and thought it was a really cool! I think this is a really great opportunity! Hello you all, my name is Clarisa Cristobal and I am a bilingual student (English and Spanish). I am a senior high school student but I am also a college part time student. I am striving in becoming a cardiologist where I could provide pro-Bono work to those who can’t afford a suitable medical life. As of now I am CPR certified, HOC certified and going to become a biotechnology assistant soon. Apart from academics, I like to run, play soccer, learn new languages (French), learn how to cook and mostly watch Netflix. I am really interested in teaching you guys since I was born in Guatemalan and came to the United States about three years ago and I know the struggle of learning a new language but mostly I know the importance and beauty of adopting a new language. 大家好!My name is Yanjie Zheng and I am a Chinese born student currently living in the US. I was born in Putuo district, Shanghai, China, and lived there until when I moved to Iowa for kindergarten. I now attend Lakeside High School in California and play on the Varsity Soccer team as a striker / left-wing. I also play volleyball at school as a setter and is a member of many programs such as California Department of Education's Gifted And Talented Education Program. My future dream is to go to UCLA or Caltech and major in Computer Science to become a software architect. I am able to speak Shanghainese, Mandarin, English, and am able to understand many more like Sichuanese and Northeastern Chinese. With my knowledge of multiple languages, I hope to use this ability to teach you English and deliver to you a high proficiency in the English Language!

Hello! My name is Joyce Wang, and I’m a junior at Westminster Academy, Memphis, Tennessee. I was born in Iowa, moved to China with my family as a baby, and lived in Qingdao and Suzhou. I moved to Memphis for high school two years ago. I enjoy reading, watching movies, traveling, cooking and baking (and eating). My favorite book is The Lord of the Rings, which is also one of my favorite movies. I play the piano and guzheng, and I sing in a choir at school. I can’t wait to get to know you better!

Hi! I'm Sean Cheng, a senior at Exeter High School in New Hampshire. I play varsity soccer for my school as a center midfielder. I'm most interested in the Earth sciences, working on various projects such as glacial remote sensing in Alaska, but I've also done work in physics regarding topological charge and condensed matter theory. I also co-founded GeoGenius, an organization to promote geographic literacy, and also partake in robotics, and geography bee coaching—I came top ten in USA geography bee nationals in 2018. I plan on studying along the lines of Earth and Planetary Sciences in the future, and I hope to help others appreciate our world better. Learning a language is just as important as learning about the world we live in, and I hope I can assist you in that. I'm fluent in English and Mandarin and I'm also quite proficient at Spanish after five years of learning the language. I look forward to getting to know you and helping you excel at learning!

Hi! My name is Selina Lin and I am a sophomore at Lower Moreland High School, in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. I’m a part of my school’s mock trial team, chamber strings, student government, and Mini-THON captains crew. I’m also an active volunteer, and I’ve helped out at local hospitals, retirement homes, libraries, and Guanghua Chinese School! I have a lot of hobbies, including playing basketball, watching movies, sketching random people, writing music, and hanging out with my friends! I was born in California, but I only spent about a month there before leaving for China. Even though English is now my main language, I lived in China for the first five years of my life and learned Mandarin as my first language. As a child of first-generation immigrant parents, I’ve always spoken Mandarin at home, and had direct exposure to Chinese culture. I’ve had firsthand experiences with difficulties about learning a second language, and using those experiences, I hope to make your journey with learning English smooth sailing!

Hi I am Shira Gui, I am 14 years old, and a freshman at Arrowhead Highschool, Wisconsin. I have been a piano player since the age of five. I enjoy playing classical music in school events and in the Church. I also love to play tennis at a tennis club and with my friends. I am very interested in modern technology and am always excited to see the technology impact on society. I love to occasionally make fun videos with a camera! She created a veteran’s day video for her middle school this year, which received very positive feedback from teachers and students. I also love to write and was in a forensics team. Hello everyone! My name is Julie and I am currently 16 years old. I love watching the show Daria, spending time with younger children, studying the environment, reading dystopian novels, and playing tennis. I moved from South Korea to Hawaii just before I turned 5 years old, so I know how difficult and frustrating it can be to learn a new language and try to communicate with others when there is a language barrier.
